Sleek Dark Mattes Vol. 2

Quick review today, as this is an item that I've mentioned a bit on my Instagram already. It used to be that IG was the supplement to my blog but some days I've feel like the platforms have reversed!

I passed through Heathrow a few weeks ago and I made a beeline towards Watsons to check out some UK drugstore brands. As it turns out, I didn't get the opportunity to shop in Germany like I thought I would have (so Douglas Perfumeries are closed on Sundays and open mid morning on weekdays, didn't get to haul Zoeva like I intended, woe) so a couple Sleek products and a Catrice blush are my only makeup momentos for this particular trip.  The Dark Mattes Vol. 2 Palette was on display as being free if you spent £12, so I grabbed something for a friend and also the Face Form Palette in Medium. My love for matte shadows has a long, well documented history and I liked the look of some of the unusual shades found in this palette.

The pigmentation is superb. While not as finely milled or as silky as some other mattes out there, the color payoff is excellent.
Sleek Dark Mattes Vol. 2 over eye primer. Top, l to r: Orbit, Ink, Highness, Noir, Dune, Pillow Talk. Bottom, l to r: Thunder, Maple, Flesh, Paper Bag, Villain, Fern.

The shadows look quite good on actual skin, particularly the teal shade Orbit and the emerald green Fern. Green shades in particular can sometimes pull funny colors on the face, but these colors stay very true to pan.

A look using some of the shades:

I used shades Maple, Flesh, Dune, Noir, Highness and Ink. That bit of blue sparkle by the lashline is Fyrinnae Dapper Mr. Shark.

This palette checks all the boxes if you just want to dip your toe into color but not commit to very much. It's inexpensive, the quality is fantastic, and the colors are very usable and well rounded. In the US, I'd check out eBay as it seems to have the lowest price for this palette, about $15 dollars shipped.

I am a little tempted by the Mattes Vol. 1 Palette, which features quite a few vivid shades but I should lay off the shadow purchasing for a while. Show a little bit of restraint for a change!
