Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita Was Not At All What I Expected

Saturday, January 24, 2015

Good morning, folks!
I woke up this morning at the usual six o'clock and started my daily weekday routine (tea, cat petting, yoga, more cat petting) before I realized that it was Saturday. Naturally, going back to sleep is impossible, so I thought I'd blog.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks were recently reformulated, so I hear, which is why a lot of people found KVD products at their local Marshalls. I wanted the shade Lolita, which had been out of stock at Sephora for quite a while now. I had stopped in store one time and swatched it one time, and had liked the sort of mauvey rose color. Or so I thought.

If you recall, I absolutely loved the first KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipstick I tried (click here to read my review of Bachelorette) and the excellent longevity, the comfortable formula, the smooth non-wrinkly matte color were consistent.

When Lolita arrived, I was surprised to see right from the tube color that it was a bit darker than I remembered, yet still within acceptable range. Maybe the reformulation changed the shade a bit? Speculation. It still looked like there was enough rose to balance out the brown tones. Swatched on my skin, it was darker and more russet than in the tube, but still a lot of reddish tones.

Worn on my lips, the lipstick took on more of a puce-grey tone than I expected. This is natural lighting, and it doesn't look horrible. A bit unusual (and far from my usual red lips) but I found the color surprisingly pleasing. However, in anything OTHER than natural lighting (anything warm tinged, like most indoor lights), this lipstick looked downright taupe. Don't get me wrong, I had been spellbound by all the IG makeup lovers that rocked the hell out of grey lips in 2014, but this just wasn't the color I had been expecting.

Morgan came home, squinted at my mouth a bit in the warm glow of our living room lighting and brought up that episode of The League where Trixie has MLA (urbandictionary definition here, be forewarned, NSFW).

I suppose I could either change out all the bulbs in our house to natural white light bulbs (ok, so this is something I have to do anyways, but I need to buy like a 20 foot ladder, most of the lights in our house are unreachable) or just wear this shade when I know I'll only be outside. That's a lot to ask from me, Lolita.

While the formula of KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks continue to impress me, this changeling shade Lolita was kind of a bust. I wanted something a bit mauvey-rose and slightly darker than a natural lip color but woe, that's not how it looked on me.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks are $19 each at Sephora.

Did you ever buy a lipstick that looked completely different in color once it was applied?
