Maybelline Summer LE Color Tattoo in Waves of White

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

If you recall, I had previously bought another shade of the LE summer Color Tattoos, Seashore Frosts but had struggled with using it. So naturally... I bought another one. Yeah, it doesn't make very much sense to me either. However, I have since figured out one way of making these products work.

In the past, I've always put a cream product under a shadow product, it seemed counter intuitive to me to wear it on top. But when I saw how G of Nouveau Cheap layered her Color Tattoos on top, I had to give it a try.

Layering it on top of black made it POP. Here, the bottom swatch is Waves of White by itself, followed by Waves of White over black matte shadow. The top swatch is Waves of White built up. Similar to Seashore Frosts I never could really make it completely opaque.  It is so beautifully duochrome over black, most of the time it looks teal but I also have seen it look blurple.

These FOTD pics aren't the best since I took them in my bathroom with flash (and also didn't finish the rest of my face aside from foundation!). I used a hoof shaped brush to stipple the cream product on top of matte shadow.

I used:

LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Primer, Rock & Republic Fatalistic shadow, LORAC Cappuccino shadow, Maybelline Waves of White Color Tattoo, Prestige Total Intensity Deepest Black liner, Milani Grandissimo mascara

Now that I've figured out the best way to apply this Color Tattoo, it has worn remarkably well. No creasing or fading when paired with a matte shadow underneath for over eight hours. I definitely think that this pretty shade is one that everyone should pick up!

Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo in LE Seashore Frosts

Friday, April 19, 2013

I realized today that I may have never blogged about a single piece of Mayebelline makeup. I've never been partial to the brand (though one polish may have came home with me at some point). But when I saw Seashore Frosts 24hr Color Tattoo, I knew  I had to have it. I think this limited edition shade is causing a bit of frenzy. I mean, it's kind of awesome. A blue, the color of worn pale bleached denim with a beautiful coppery-bronze-gold patina. It's really complex, at some angles I swear I see pink too.

Left is two layers, right is one layer over black. You can really see the bronzey-copper sparkle. If there is one piece of makeup I'm not found of, it is cream shadows (lipstick in pencil form and anything in a click pen wand are others). Buying this Color Tattoo is a bit of a fluke and I'm afraid this 24hr Color Tattoo is confirming my suspicions. The texture is smooth and very creamy, and I think it looks wonderful on my arm, it looks less wonderful on my lids.

I have a slightly hooded crease that gets a lot of friction action. This photo was taken 10 minutes after I applied a thin layer over primer using a soft, synthetic brush. For the first four minutes, I closed my eyes lightly so that it could dry, but opened them after being bored trying to read the news through squinting eyes. Even after 10 minutes, slight creasing is beginning. Within an hour, it starts to look patchy.

I've only owned this for a few days so I'm not ready to declare my final verdict. So far things aren't look great though. I have a hard time applying enough that you are able to see the color, I face immediate creasing and patchiness. I've tried thin layers, thick layers, single thin layer, over primer, no primer, over a black base, with a sponge, with a brush, with my finger...etc. I'm only able to get this thin wash of color, so it is slightly disappointing.

For all you Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo lovers out there, what are your favorite tips for a great looking application? I hope anyone searching for this shade has better luck with it than I do!

Maybelline Downtown Brown

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Last month, my beau (hah, that word makes me giggle) was in town and I was trying to enjoy the last few days of my summer before school began. He was a little perplexed as to why I kept on stopping at the drugstores in town.

Morgan: What are you looking for?
Me: Nothing, nothing. *under my breath* Drat. It's not here.

(next drugstore). Repeat above scene four times.

Finally, I found it! At a Walgreens. That fall limited edition Maybelline display. Complete with some cool duochrome polishes (already have my China Glaze New Bohemians, so *yaaaawn*) AND THIS.

Maybelline Downtown Brown.

Me: Whoa Nelly! Look at that shimmer. Duochrome. Multichrome even. Do you think it translates onto the nail from the bottle?
Morgan: Are you going to buy that?
Me: Well. I shouldn't. I mean, I was all hung up about Cover Girl Chocolate Mint, and then I frankened that and felt a sense of satisfaction.
Morgan: Why are we here?
Me: I just wanted to look at it, ok?
Morgan: So you're not going to buy it?
Me: I don't know. I mean, it seems pointless to buy something similar to something that I already made. But look at that shimmer. WHAT IF IT DOES LOOK THAT STUNNING ON THE NAIL?
Morgan: I'm going to get a Diet Coke. *walks away*.

Morgan comes back. I'm still holding the bottle.

Me: Arggh. It could be everything I've ever dreamed of.
Morgan: So.. you are... going to buy it?
Me: Unnngrrrgggh. (Defeated sound, similar to the air being let out of a balloon slowly).

Morgan rolls his eyes, grabs the bottle of polish and pays for it with his Diet Coke.

I like to think that my boyfriend is all soft on the inside and that he bought it for me out of love, respect for my hobby. The reality is that he bought it because he didn't want to stand in a Walgreens for another half an hour.

To sum it up: three coats. Crazy multichrome shimmer doesn't translate to the nail. Still cool. Keeping it forever. I regret nothing. Thanks, my love!

Maybelline Colorama Topcoat #45 Blazes of Blue

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Good evening! Today I want to show you a polish that I spent a long time searching for and finally bought it off of a blog sale earlier this year. Yeah, it's discontinued and very hard to find. I suck, sorry. I'm not taunting you, I swear.

Maybelline Colorama Blazes of Blue is a milky polish with translucent glitter suspended in it. The glitters shift from a bright blue to almost purple. Over black, the effect is stunning!
In the above picture, my skin looks funny but it accurately shows off how cool the glitter is.

I had to up the ante a little bit by layering it with another one of my favorite glitters- Rimmel Eccentricity. Wicked awesome, if I do say so myself. Wait. This one is discontinued. Double whammy, again I apologize!

What's your favorite polish that's been discontinued?

Happy Halloween! Demise of Autumn Nails

Monday, October 31, 2011
Happy Halloween!
I hope that if you and your family celebrate anything today, that you have a safe and happy holiday.
A lot of people had Halloween nails, with ghosts, pumpkins, candy corn etc but I decided to do something a little different today.
To me, this day marks the end of Autumn, at least here in Minnesota. From here on out, it gets super chilly and rather gloomy, with only occasional tolerable weather. Today however, I cherish the vivid colored trees and the taste of spiced cider.
The giant picture above is from my backyard where I have a beautiful maple tree.
I decided to do a manicure inspired by the beautiful colors I saw in that tree. Predominately scarlet with winks of tangerine and flashes of goldenrod.

I added a matte top coat, because I felt like it better represented the dry texture of leaves fallen to the ground, ready to be raked.
This is what it looked like, shiny.

The flaked topcoat is from the now discontinued Maybelline Colorama line. It's #23 called Ruby Rays. It has the same sort of flakies as found in Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure suspended in a bright translucent coral base.
I used Essie Lollipop underneath and topped with Hard Candy Matte-ly In Love.

Have a great night, everyone! Can't wait to see everyone's Halloween costumes, makeup and nails.

Love,
Mimi

Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Foundation Review

Thursday, August 5, 2010
This is the first Maybelline foundation I've tried in a long time. In fact I think the last one I used was the Pure Makeup foundation which was quite watered down and didn't provide very good coverage. However, this new foundation came out a few weeks ago and due to initial good reviews on MUA, I decided to give it a try.
I had gotten tanner and wanted to find an NC25ish foundation that was pretty cheap so that I wouldn't feel wasteful (Pfft, I'm not the sort to drop $40 on a summer bottle of MUFE HD!).
I liked that CVS had testers, because I was able to find the right color on the first try. It comes in a compact/jar style contraption, with a flip top with a spot for a sponge and a screw off base with the actual foundation inside.

For me, mousse (cream, really) foundations need to be applied a little differently than regular liquid foundations. I tried stippling it but that really messed with the coverage. Instead, I used a wet sponge to lightly pat the mousse into my skin.
The first thing I noticed was a slight tingling sensation (should have paid closer attention to that, actually). Then I peered into the mirror and second thing I noticed was hot damn, the finish was beautiful! Dream Smooth indeed! Really, my skin looked really smooth despite blemishes and scarring. The coverage was pretty decent, medium I'd say and I was really happy with the color match. I picked Classic Ivory (the second shade from the light side) and it just about matched NC25. The compact comes with a sponge, but it stains easily, so you might have to buy a bag of disposable sponge wedges.
Four hours later, uh oh. My face feels rather slick. Parts of my cheek and forehead feel swollen and tender, like right before an outbreak of zits. I can practically hear my pores screaming. I washed all the foundation off quickly, but the damage was already- 3 or 4 angry little breakouts. I'm not sure what ingredient really broke me out (usually it's the SPF, whether it be chemical or physical). Ahhh, what a pity- if it didn't break me out I would have tried to control the oil and have tried to work with it a bit. Now we'll never know.
(Actually, in the interest of full disclosure I bravely stupidly tried this foundation again a few days later. Repeat performance- acne with a few hours. But yes, I can manage the oil with a bit of silica powder on top.)
I won't say that just because this foundation broke me out, you shouldn't try it.
Since different people react differently to different things, I have no idea how it'll work for you. It was $9.50, but there was a manufacturer's coupon nearby for two dollars off. The crappy thing is that the color range is REALLY limited. Keep in mind that quite a few of the foundations are the same light/darkness, but are various undertones.
Bottom line is- if it doesn't break you out and you can find a shade that matches, it's a great finish for a drugstore foundation. Perhaps especially for dry skin, since the formula is so creamy.

Have you tried this foundation yet?

Dueling Eggplants: L'oreal HiP vs Maybelline EyeStudio Liners

Saturday, April 10, 2010

Ah, violet liners- how you tempt me so. It doesn't matter that I already have about 5 of you in liquid and pencil form but I crave you even more.
Now, I finally got around to getting the L'oreal HiP Cream Liner (I'd been telling myself over and over that I really didn't need it, but it was 40% this week at CVS and free with my bonus bucks) and I'm glad that I did.
Dark plummy liners are so shhhhhhexy. Blargh, that usually drives me crazy when people type like that, but for aubergine colored liners, I'll make an exception. I like how they're completely professional looking (when applied liberally of course) but also great for doing a dark violet smoky look to make eyes smolder.
I'm blabbing, on to the actual review.

Here's what they had in common: both came with brushes that I wouldn't really use for liner. The Maybelline brush actually makes a great lip brush, great for nice edges. But I don't like how it's rounded, I'm a liner control freak that requires precision. The HiP one could be usable in a pinch, but the applicator is just so small it becomes hard to handle. Both are also housed in small glass pots, with plastic caps.
Quick note: This is NOT my wrist. It's my fiance's. That's why it's really hairy and a tad darker than mine (he's about NC25), I did not become infected with lycanthropy . Also, there was no way I could drag him outside to take pictures, I'm afraid you'll have to do with indoor shots with flash.
The Maybelline one is much more sheer and though it's billed as a gel, is harder to work with (kind of chunky). Also- a pet peeve of mine is that in the picture of the 'final look' on the packaging it looks really opaque and dark, but in actuality it's got kind of got gold shimmer and really quite see-through, requiring many layers to build it up. The few times I've worn it, it's smudged. Grr.
The L'oreal HiP one is creamier, but more blue violet than the other and darker. It's more subtle, less shimmer and much more opaque. Easy to work with, as you can see it only takes one swipe to reveal the color. This one wins, hands down. It might look dull to those looking for a pop of color- it's really more of a 'unblack' when lining the eyes. Pretty long lasting on the eyes as well.
Tiny bit of difference in the amount- L'oreal 4.5g vs Maybelline 3g.
Here's the worst part- you want to know the reason why I swatched it on Mr. MakeupWithdrawal? Because in the few times I've played with the Maybelline one, it has stained like you would not believe (Luckily, this is the type of thing he won't notice). Seriously- gross grey stains that take a few days to come off. Come on now, Maybelline- what's the deal here?
