Mehron iNtense Pressed Powder Pigments Earth Palette: Review, Swatches & Looks

Saturday, January 11, 2014

Earlier this year, I reviewed the shades in the Mehron iNtense Pressed Powder Pigments Fire Palette (click here to check that review out) and really fell in love with the extremely bright colors and high pigmentation. I found myself longing for the other two palettes so that I could own all 24 beautiful shades so with Black Friday sales, I treated myself to one of them, Earth.

The palette comes in a simple paper box, bearing the Mehron iNtense logo.

It houses eight shades with the names written on the bottom of the palette. Each pan is roughly 36mm. The case is sleek and black.
There's a slot for a brush, a synthetic one is included.
The brush is thin, soft and rounded; not especially great for use with these dry matte pigments. It doesn't pick up much pigment to pack on color nor does it blend well. It's really better suited for creams so I've repurposed it as a concealer brush.
These are swatches done over primer. Left to right: Red Earth, Desert Sand, Earth Crust, Mountain Moss, Carbon, Graphite, Night Sky and Morning Sky.

Carbon has the most frightening, outstanding pigmentation. I think this might be the truest matte black shadow I've owned. It's honestly almost too black, you barely need to touch your brush to apply it. All the shades have great pigmentation though Night Sky and Morning Sky were somewhat chalky.

The texture of these is definitely on the dry side, even for matte shadows. I think the wetter and creamier your base or primer is, the better the color impact. I find these shadows to look particularly well with creamy formulas like NYX HD Eye Base and LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer and not so well with my NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (looked a bit scaly/chalky, didn't blend that well).

Here's a few EOTDs I did featuring these shades.
Earth Crust on the lid, Desert Sand in the crease. Touch of Carbon in the outer V and on the lower lash line.

Here we have Mountain Moss on the lid, Desert Sand in the crease. Yellow Spark (not in this palette, in the Fire Palette) in the inner corner. Earth Crust, Desert Sand and Carbon on the lower lash line.

In short you get six shades that are great to work with, just absolutely phenomenal pigmentation and two shades that are a bit finicky and chalky, but still vibrant. Regularly priced at $52.95, they are a steal if you can get them on sale. Speak of which, at the moment Cherry Culture has them for 50%! I definitely bought the last palette, Wind, without a second thought. I really absolutely love working with these Mehron iNtense shades, they are a joy to use and photograph.

Review & Swatches: Mehron INtense Pressed Pigment Powders

Monday, August 5, 2013

Good evening!

I'm very excited for tonight's review of Mehron's INtense Pressed Pigment Powders and if you love matte shadows, I think you will be as well. Mehron is a brand that many of you might have not heard of, their products are perhaps best known in the makeup world for use in theatrical, film, television, clowning and face painting artistry. However I think that after you get a good look at these vibrant colors, you'll want to get your hands on these beautiful bright colors.

The Mehron INtense Pressed Pigment Powders come individually packaged in very functional clear flip top hinged pans, each pan of product weighing 3 grams (.11oz). These INtense Pressed Pigments are also available in beautifully coordinated 8 pan Pro palettes.  All the shades featured today are from the Fire Palette.
From left to right: Hot Pink, Inferno, Yellow Spark, Electric Green, Fire Island, Ignite, Purple Heat, Pure Lightning.  Swatches done over primer. Other than Hot Pink (which photographed more coral, it is cooler and a brighter hot pink) and Yellow Spark (less canary, more of a bright primary yellow) the swatches came out very accurate.

In terms of color payoff and application, the shades did vary a bit. Hot Pink was the clear winner with a superb finely milled texture and great pigmentation. The other shades were also very good, blending easily with smooth application but Pure Lightning is not as good in terms of payoff as the other shades; a bit chalky and not as velvety. I highly recommend using eye primer and then if you really want the best color intensity, a white base as well.
Here I've used Pure Lightning in the inner corner, Ignite packed tightly on the lid and Purple Heat to wing out the look.
Here I have Electric Green all over the lid, working outwards with Fire Island. Since I'm working with such intense shades, I really did a lot of patting on of the product, not brushing around.

These colors are really just absolutely fantastic if you love brightly colored looks like I do. I truly cannot emphasize how bright and insanely radiant the colors are. They are not limited to use on the eye, I honestly cannot wait to start incorporating them into my Halloween makeup looks as cheek colors. If I had to name one flaw, the only one I can find is that on the packaging of the singles, the name of the shade rubs off rather easily (a bit of of clear tape will easily preserve the printing). I've already made a cart on the Mehron website for the shades that I want next.

Perhaps the best part of these Mehron INtense Pressed Pigment Powders is the price. Individually, they are $9.95 which is fantastic considering the amount (again, a huge pan with 3 grams of product - compare that to your typical 26mm pans like MAC which contain around 1.3 grams) while the 8 pan Pro Palettes are $52.95. The INtense Powders can be purchased directly from Mehron through their website.

What do you think of these bright punchy shades? Have you tried any Mehron products before?
