Cargo Lumières du Monde Holiday Palette

Thursday, October 28, 2010
Cargo comes out with some awesome palettes (remember Hands of Hope and the Runway Palette?) and when I saw this palette at Macy's yesterday, I was thrilled.
My Macy's has a small section near the entrance that contains brands like Urban Decay, Sue Devitt, Stila, Cargo, etc. Anyways, I was walking by this section when I was ambushed- a sales associate proudly brandished the Lumières du Monde palette at me, and initially, I joined in her excitement.
I mean, the palette is beautiful! Eight large pans of shadows imprinted with this intricate design- I was overwhelmed. And in the center, a two layered bronzer/blush thing that just... called to me.

Indoors, under lightbox, flash. All swatched dry, over bare skin.
Left to right: a shimmery teal, a metallic yellow, a bright sparkly blue, a antiqued gold-olive shimmer, a periwinkle shimmer, a matte white, a matte tan, a matte brown with micro glitter. The three swatches on the very right are from top to bottom: the blush, the bronzer and the blush/bronzer mixed together.

However, once I brought it home it was kind of a different story.
The shadow I was looking forward the most- the olive shimmer was chunky and it just did NOT want to stick to my skin (not even wet, primer, base). Other than that- all the other colors were decent (I mean, they're not as finely milled as I like nor very creamy but... they're shadows)  and the blush/bronzer pan was pretty. Also, I wish the palette also wasn't so bulky (it's almost as wide as the drawer in my Helmer in which it lives).
But... I mean it was only $29. Yeah! Not even thirty bucks. Hopefully in the next few days, I'll find a way to make this palette work for me.

So, what do you think about this palette? Are there any other holiday palettes that caught your eye?

Review: Cargo Ceylon Eyeshadow

Monday, August 16, 2010
I'm emotionally turbulent about this shadow, I really am.
Look at it. Doesn't it look nice? Doesn't it look like it's waving "Mimi, come uuuuuuse me! I'm gonna be the most perfect plum shade ever."
The first 4 times I used this shadow, blech- was the payoff terrible! It looked dingy and not very shimmery, it couldn't be more disagreeable of a color more like a dried up raisin color than a friendly plum.
Indoors, under lightbox.
Then, some miracle happened (not really, I think I broke through the top of the cake, where it was harder and less pigmented) and wow, was the color great! It was this smokey, sparkly plum, softer texture and way better pigmentation- better in every way. My heart leapt for joy but fell back to the ground very quickly. You see, there was still one thing keeping this shadow from being perfect and that was the lasting power. With a primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion, I've never had a problem with shadow lasting, anything I put on my lids pretty much lasts the whole day. I mean, it doesn't look as crisp and fresh as when I put it on, but you can still see the pure color. Nope, not with this shadow. Within four hours, it had slumped down my eyelids and looked like that dirty, awful shade that I had started this paragraph describing.
Even when used wet- the same thing happened!(Though with a bit of staining too) I purchased this heavily discounted at $8, so I'm not super upset but I will say that I'm disappointed. I guess I'll use this as a liner with my La Femme sealer, but I'll pout every time, know what potential it could have had.

Cargo St. Tropez Eyeshadow + FOTD

Monday, June 14, 2010
Hmm? What's this? Yet another neutral shimmering shadow? Why of course, I love neutrals especially if it's a shade I don't quite have yet.
I'd like to introduce to you... Cargo eyeshadow in St. Tropez! It's a soft golden tawny shade that shimmers quite alluringly in the pan. And ah, the pan- I simply adore the packaging. Something about the sleek tin embossed with Cargo's logo really appeals to me, so minimalistic yet so functional. It's a 36mm pan, but I have a feeling that due to the nature of the packaging, I won't be able to depot (not that I want to!).
Ok, so that's where my love for this eye shadow ends. It barely shows up on my lids, only as a faint orangey golden glow even though my skin tone hasn't gotten that tan (I'm guessing around NC25 right now). I don't think it's the most flattering all over the lid color like I had hoped it'd be.
I read the other reviews on MakeupAlley and it seems like 99% of people love this shadow, but for me it wasn't that great of a buy. In addition to not being a suitable color for me, without primer, it just didn't last at all. However, the formula was quite nice, very blendable- also decent pigmentation.
It does show up much better when wet, so that may be once option for me to actually use this shadow. The other option is to use it as a blending shade, to help ease the stark contrast between dark and light shadows so eye makeup looks less harsh.
I could do worse, I suppose. It was from a Cargo sale on Editor's Closet (the shipping took so ridiculously long that I don't think I'll every buy from them or their affiliated beauty site ever again) for $8. Factoring in shipping costs, it was closer to $12.
Here be the FOTD that I did with St. Tropez today. I decided that I didn't actually really like the lip color with it, so go ahead and take your finger and cover up that part of the screen. You can also mentally block out the wet hair. *Sigh* I really need to find a summer tan appropriate foundation.
