Glitter Gal Pysanky Nails

Sunday, April 20, 2014

Happy Easter!

Today's manicure is inspired by some of the recent pysanky designs I've worked on. It turned out a bit more tribal/geometric looking than I had anticipated but I absolutely fell in love with the colors I used.

The three colors (plus a no name off white color) I used were from Glitter Gal, one of my all time favorite brands for holographic shades. I used Citrine which is a light orange/tan holo, Belgian Chocolate which is a stunning dark rich brown holo and Redback which is a squishy chili red. I used a thin brush and just free handed everything.

You can purchase Glitter Gal shades directly from Glitter Gal or through their international stockists. GG is based in Australia.

Do you have any favorite Glitter Gal shades? I've swatched quite a few of the holos, they are some of the finest ones out there!

Glitter Gal Lizard Belly

Thursday, September 6, 2012

One of the few Glitter Gal holos left in my stash that I have not shown you folks. The reason being that I had difficulty taking pictures of it. This is the third time that I've put it on, taken pictures and when I reviewed all the images, thought that they were absolutely rubbish.

I want to love Lizard Belly. A sultry dark green holo. But I can't. First of all, the holographic nature is greatly diminished on the nails compared to in the bottle. It's not its fault, honestly. With darker bases, holo particles have to work that much harder. Too much silver holo and it ends up looking grey. Actually, I think that happens a bit with Lizard Belly. The base is too opaque and the submerged holo particles look a bit... grainy? That's the only way I can put it.

Wonderful glossy formula though.

Glitter Gal Sunday: Bronzed Aussie

Sunday, April 15, 2012
*This is a scheduled post. I'm away for the weekend, but I'll be sure to try to answer your questions or comments as soon as I get back!*

Happy Sunday!

Today's Glitter Gal polish is called Bronzed Aussie. It's a warm, lighter bronze metallic with holographic chunks. When I first saw this polish, I was a little apprehensive. I just didn't know if that was a good combination or if it would look good on me.

It's so glowy and warm, I surprisingly like this one. It's very easy to wear and I was pleasantly proven wrong! There are some streak marks, as you can see from the photos. However, I think the holo bits help disguise them. I've worn three coats in these pictures.

What do you think of this color and finish?

Glitter Gal Sunday: Bruised Ego

Sunday, April 8, 2012

This is one of my favorite Glitter Gal polishes so far. Bruised Ego, a very holo linear purple.

The white blur in the background is Kuma rolling around in the grass.

This color is a little sheer, so I needed three full coats. Look at that range of rainbow effect! Gorgeous! I love how glossy this shade is without a top coat. Such a beautiful shade to behold!

Have a great week!

Glitter Gal Sunday: Brain Freeze

Sunday, April 1, 2012
Happy Sunday!

Today's Glitter Gal polish is a black holographic called Brain Freeze. I'm pretty disappointed with this one. I mean, just look at the bottle! Doesn't it look like a wonderful bottle of rainbows, unicorns and happiness?

As it turns out, the holo is quite weak in this polish. In fact, you can barely see a few flecks of the 3D rainbow. I have a hypothesis about this, and I swear that one day I'll get around to posting it.

Brain Freeze however, is very black and highly pigmented. Also dries very glossy and does not skip when applied like holos are sometimes so inclined to do. It's a good thing that it dries so glossy by itself, because the addition of top coat weakens the holo even further, can you believe that? Indoors, this polish looks like a silver speckled black creme.

Anyways, have a great night and hopefully a fantastic week!

Glitter Gal Sunday: Whiteout

Sunday, March 25, 2012
Happy Sunday!

Today's Glitter Gal is um... interesting. I can certainly say that I own nothing else like it.
Whiteout is a white with pink-orange opalescence (I'm not sure if I'd call this a true duochrome) and silver holographic glitter.

It's rather sheer, even with three coats on I can still see my nail line somewhat.

It reminds me of butter London Knackered in the sense that it has got some holo glitter thrown into a base that has color shift.  Honestly, it is not my cup of tea. I think I'd like it if it was just the white base with the coppery pink flash because I don't know off hand of anything quite like it, but with the addition of the glitter it is just too much.

What do you think? Up your alley or just visually offensive?

Glitter Gal Sunday: 10 to Midnight

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Happy Sunday!
The sun wasn't cooperating today (I fear that it seldom considers the wishes of one puny makeup blogger) so I pulled some photos that I had as backup for today's Glitter Gal. This is 10 to Midnight, a very frosty gunmetal holo.

I think you'll agree with me that the frost is much easier to see in this polish, especially if you look at the tips where the holo effect isn't the most prominent.
Fantastic formula, really. This is two coats without topcoat, as I find that greatly diminishes the holo effect.

How do you feel about frost holos? I feel like that they don't occur all that often among holo polishes. To me, they're certainly ... interesting, but since frost is far from my favorite finish (both in polish and makeup) I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.

Glitter Gal Sunday: High Voltage

Monday, March 12, 2012

I know it's a day late... but I didn't get home until the early hours of this morning from my trip.
This is Glitter Gal High Voltage. It's from the Sparkle range, meaning that it has larger, chunkier holo bits.

Here, I've worn with three coats. I like how glossy my Glitter Gal polishes have been drying, at least all the ones I've tried so far. I hate putting on a top coat that dampens the holo effect.

I've also had really good luck with how long they've lasted. I usually change my polish every day, but this one was so pretty that I kept it on for three days, no chips. Yes! Three days without topcoat! You could most definitely get even longer wear time if you don't work with your hands like I do.

In other news, I can't wait to use Morgan's camera that I uhm, "borrowed" from him. He's not happy about it, but I pointed out that until the weather warms up, he's not going camping or hiking anytime soon so it would be just sitting there, untouched. So I'm using it until May, when hopefully I'll buy myself a camera for my birthday.

Glitter Gal Sunday: Marine Blue

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Happy Sunday, It's Glitter Gal time!
Today's Glitter Gal is called Marine Blue. You guessed it- it's blue.

As you can see, Marine Blue has a frosty blue base, very bright. This is three coats and though it certainly is something to behold, it's not quite as holo as other Glitter Gal holos. I have a hypothesis on that. I swear I'll present it when I'm done compiling the watches.

The frosty thing just isn't quite 'me'. And neither is this shade of blue, it gives me bad Drew Carey flashbacks, a la Mimi's frosty blue shadow.

What do you think? How do you feel about frosty blue?

Glitter Gal Sunday: Turbulence

Sunday, February 26, 2012
Happy Sunday, everyone!

Today I have a gorgeous linear holo to show you, Glitter Gal Turbulence. It's probably one of the most holo-y polishes I've ever laid my eyes on. I don't think that 'silver' is a good way to describe this holo, it almost has a colorless base. If I had to name the base color, I'd say that it was a soft ash white.

It's quite sheer. I've worn it here with three coats but I can still see a bit of my smile line.

I figured that it would also look great as a topcoat for lighter pastel shades and I wasn't wrong. Here, I've used one coat of Turbulence on top of Spoiled Toad-ally Amazing.

Isn't that lovely?

Have a great night! Anyone else watching the Oscars tonight?

Glitter Gal Sunday - Type O (I Named This Polish!)

Sunday, February 19, 2012
A few months ago, Glitter Gal had a competition to rename most of their polishes, both from the 3D Sparkle line and the 3D Holographic line. To my complete amazement, Anna and Kerry chose my name for the polish formally known as Red Sparkle.

I give you, Type O!

This is three coats, without topcoat. I found that topcoat definitely dulled the holographic sparkle. The polish looks like there are little chips of blood red rubies, it's spectacular. Great formula though and the finish is quite shiny on its own.

For submitting the winning name, Glitter Gal very generously sent me 16 bottles (in the new, larger 15ml size) of most of their polishes. 16 polishes! I would have been just happy with the bragging rights to Type O, but now I can't wait to show you all the pretty Glitter Gal shades. So I thought I'd have a series for the next 16 weeks, every Sunday I'll show you a different shade. Sound good?

Kuma loves to lay at the front door and watch me take pictures of polishes in the sunlight. What he doesn't love is having his picture taken. He's wary of me possibly using flash.

Do you own any of the Glitter Gal polishes?
