NARS Velvet Lip Glide Set: Review & Swatches

Thursday, August 10, 2017

Recently, a friend and I decided to split this set of NARS Velvet Lip Glides.  There were some cooler shades that she wanted and I was definitely drawn to the warm shades. That's a foundation for a great friendship, pro tip. I usually don't review things so quickly after purchase but 1) I feel like my mind is made up, I'm not going to budge also 2) it's exclusive to Ulta and there's a sale.

NARS Loaded Palette

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

I've managed to hit pan on a lot of products this year and among the most notable was my main traveling palette, the 2014 Laura Mercier Artiste For Eyes Palette. I didn't want to bring it on trips any more, (now I'm just always  low key stressing about shattering its shades) so I was very happy to get the warm NARS Loaded Eyeshadow Palette

Weighing In On NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Saturday, January 21, 2017

Recently, I found myself quite nearly out of foundation. First, I had tossed all my old, really quite expired foundation (like MUFE HD. THEY DON'T EVEN MAKE THAT ANYMORE). Then, I started to run out of Dolce & Gabbana The Perfect Luminous Foundation (review here, one of my all time favorites). Next I ordered a bottle of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, a tried and true favorite, but encountered strange new oxidation with it, the likes of which I had never seen before. At the end of my rope, a sales associate at Sephora recommended NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation. That's right. Me, purchasing a foundation without having read any reviews regarding it beforehand - I hope this conveys how desperate  I was feeling.

Concealer Standoff: NARS Radiant Creamy vs [A'Pieu] Creamy Moist

Monday, January 16, 2017

Recently I made an order from the Korean website SweetCorea and my order included not one, but two shades of a concealer that I had been interested in for a while. Word on the street (ok, the internet) is that the [A'Pieu] Creamy Moist Concealer was a comparable offering to the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer but at a much lower price point.

Fast Forward to Fall with Glambot

Wednesday, July 30, 2014
 Good afternoon!

Last weekend we went to Lake Tahoe to escape the heat and consequently, I took a break from bright summer colors to wear darker, moodier shades. It was the perfect opportunity to use the makeup I had ordered from Glambot.

EOTD: NARS Outremer

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Oh, NARS Outremer. Probably one of my favorite blue eye shadows. It's matte, it's bold, it's blue.

And yet somewhat tricky to use.
Here you can see it in pan form, in the NARS New Wave Palette that I bought a couple years back. Sorry the pans aren't pristine, but hey - there's proof that I use this palette.

NARS Heat Wave Lipstick

Friday, March 28, 2014

Good day!

I was chatting with someone about matte/satin warm red lipsticks that leaned orange when I realized with shame that I had never blogged about NARS Heat Wave, the reigning red lipstick of my affection. I feel like I've been searching for this tomato red for years, now I am finally content. In fact, this is the shade I wore to our Vegas wedding last December.

Review: NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Powder

Monday, June 17, 2013

I was pretty excited when a few months ago NARS came out with this Light Reflecting Powder. At first, it seemed that only Sephora carried the Pressed version, so I waited until Nordstrom had it as well so that I could finish off one of my Christmas gift cards (does anyone else keep gift cards for a ridiculously long time before using them? You'd think they'd be burning a hole through my pocket!) because I sure as heck was not getting the loose version. So many of my powders have gone to an early grave because I'm quite clumsy.

With so many of the "HD" and other supposedly photograph enhancing powders out there being just silica, I was initially skeptical that I was paying for a quarter of an once of pressed cheap silica. Luckily that's not the case. While silica is an ingredient, I much prefer how the NARS Light Reflecting Powder works on my skin. When I first swatched the powder on my skin, I did a double take. It's so translucent (dare I say crystal clear) that at first I thought I wasn't swatching it hard enough, it looked like nothing was showing up on my skin! I think that's a promising sign for those with darker skin tones who may find that a lot of "translucent" powders still have a white cast. Though there is a pearly shimmer in the pan and if you swatch it fairly thickly on your hand, but it does not show up on the face at all (unlike say a product like the Guerlain Meteorites which definitely can look a bit sparkly on the skin if overdone).

Here's the ingredients in case you were curious (taken from a review on Sephora's website as I lost the box before I could type it out):

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Silica, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Glycerin, Squalane, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Polysorbate 80, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Carrageenan, Xanthan Gum, 1,2-Hexanediol, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Maris Aqua (Sea Water), Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Magnesium Silicate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Tin Oxide, Mica, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491 (Iron Oxides)

It's fantastic. Just phenomenal! Here's the break down; it mattifies my greasy areas, it doesn't dry out my dry areas and it photographs just beautifully. My nose gets ridiculously oily in the summer (actually, pretty much year round) and I usually can't go out without having to stop in the restroom to blot at least once. I rarely blot now. In fact, I think I've used my blotting sheets just one time since I started to use this powder. Crazy, right? Considering how well it mattifies my nose, I thought for sure that it would make my dry chin and mouth region look disgustingly scaly or make my foundation pill as silica often times does for me. No! The rest of my skin stays moisturized and smooth.
Photographed with flash. Vacant expression not included with product.
Originally I had wanted to buy one of those Hourglass Ambient Light Powders but when I tried them in store, I only thought they were so-so. I tried on Dim and Diffused which looked pretty good in some lighting situations but I could definitely see a cast of color in others. I'm glad I went with the NARS Light Reflecting Powder because it looks good in all situations.

I think that application is key with this powder. The first few times I wore I used a fluffy brush to dab some on my skin, the lightly brush outwards to whisk away any trace of excess powder. That worked ok, I was somewhat pleased with the results. The Pressed version comes with a thin velour sponge which to my surprise made for exceptional application. I found that by pressing the powder into my skin, my skin looked ridiculously good. Smooth, super even, pores smaller than they've ever looked. Fantastic right?

Well, the sponge also causes a bit of a problem. First, though it is really thin (funny thing, this super thin little sponge sells for $6 on the NARS site) you can't put it in the compact and close it, it won't fit. In the little pouch included with the powder, there is a separate little compartment for the sponge (at first when I bought it, I completely overlooked it and couldn't for the life of me find the sponge!). Also I find that reusing the sponge can track oil and traces of foundation from your face onto the surface of the powder and cause that dreaded hard layer.

It's not a convenient solution, but I use these sponges I bought last year at a small Japanese store, a clean sponge for every application. After I've accumulated a few, I simply toss them in a small lingerie laundry bag and send them through the wash and let them air dry.

I wanted to add, I did in fact try the Loose version of this powder a few times but was only "meh" about the results. I think I wasn't a huge fan for the same reason I didn't like using a fluffy brush to apply this powder. With the Loose version, I think brushing it on disrupts the fine vellus hair (you know, that nearly invisible hair that everyone has all over their face) and my foundation a bit, despite my best efforts to use a gentle sweeping motion. I much, much prefer pressing the product onto my skin.

In short, I really love this powder. I was surprised by how well suited it was for my combination dry and oily skin and how flattering it looks when photographed with flash. I think that the pouch it comes with is a nice touch because I definitely take it everywhere with me, though I really don't need to since it controls oil so well. I can safely say that as my new favorite setting powder, I will for sure be rebuying once I run out!

NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder is $34 for .24 oz of product (the Loose version contains more, .34 oz). Available on the NARS website and at Nordstrom and Sephora.

What's your current favorite setting powder?

Three Smudge Brushes at Three Price Points

Monday, June 3, 2013

One of the types of brushes that I've recently been infatuated with is the smudging brush. Short and stout with a rounded shape, it gives the user a lot of control and the ability to really pack on color. They're also great for creating smokey eyes and smudging out liner. Here are three very differently priced smudge brushes.

Let's start with the most inexpensive. Made and sold by Rite Aid, $3.99. Synthetic hairs. It looks like a duo fiber brush but that's just the coloring. The bristles are not varying sizes like a real duo fiber, but they are very soft. The least dense of the three brushes. Slightly tapered plastic handle.

Next, the Sigma E20 Short Shader. $10, natural hair. Medium density and the hairs are a bit blunt so it can feel a bit rough when smudging out color.

NARS Smudge Brush, $26. Natural hairs. The most dense out of all the brushes, softer than the Sigma.

Out of the three, my favorite is the NARS followed by the Rite Aid brush because it is very soft. The Rite Aid brush has slightly longer bristles that are more pliable than the other two. Having these two, the Sigma I could do without. However, Sephora Collection has a Pro Smudge Brush #11 that I think is VERY comparable to the NARS brush, I would most certainly call it dupe worthy as it very similar and cheaper at $18.

Have any favorite smudger brushes? The next one I have my eye on is the Laura Mercier one, because it has a smaller head than the ones I have.

NARS Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base Review

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

A while ago Sephora had a 500pt perk filled with deluxe NARS goodies that I absolutely had to have. This was the first time I was actually excited about spending my points, the last 500pt perk was the Laura Mercier set which was quite disappointing. One of the things in this perk set was the NARS Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base.

Right off the bat I have to say that I'm not a fan of the tube packaging. It's definitely better than the old Urban Decay Primer Potion but in general I prefer squeeze tubes. The primer is white in color but dries to a virtually invisible finish. I apply this with a clean concealer brush to ensure an even layer all over my eye lids.

This base really does intensify colors quite well, increases the longevity of shadows and prevents creasing. Here's four shadows that are all across the spectrum in terms of cost and finish. We have a matte, a frosty shimmer, a sparkly metallic and a fine glitter shadow. (In case you were wondering, they are: Illamasqua Melodrama, Too Faced Poison Orchid, Bobbi Brown Chome Silver, Boots 17 Statuesque)

On the left side of each pair of swatches is bare skin, the right is over the base.

My eyelids used to be a lot oilier but in the last few years they dried up a bit, I would say that they are now closer to being "neutral", neither oily nor dry. Only humid days they do feel slick. I found that the NARS Pro Primer Smudge Proof Base actually dried my eyelids out a bit upon application, causing my makeup to look scaly. Another down side for me was that it did not transition eye shadow very well. By that I mean I would always know exactly where I had applied the NARS Smudge Proof Base and where I hadn't. Here's a visual example, the circle indicates where you can see exactly where the primer ends:

You might think that it is barely visible for as the wearer I definitely noticed the inability to blend and extend the shadows out in the area. Usually with primers with a bit more slip to them, the transition is a lot more forgiving for me and looks smoother. With this primer I really had to pay extra attention to make sure that EVERY part of my eye area was covered in primer.

I think a small ranking really helps demonstrate the order of preference. Here are the easily accessible primers that I've tried. In order from most favorite to least favorite:

1. LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer
2. Urban Decay Primer Potion
3. (tie) NARS Smudge Proof Eye Base
    NYX HD Eye Shadow Base
4. Too Faced Shadow Insurance
5. e.l.f. Eye Shadow Primer (original $1 one, not the mineral one)

One last thing I feel like I have to comment on. The price. The full sized tube is actually quite small and pricy, $24 for .26 oz. Compare that to LORAC, which is $21 for .47 oz or Urban Decay which is $20 for .37 oz.

So in short while I think it is a great primer, for my lids it doesn't top my HG LORAC Primer. I think that if you have really oily lids this may be your best bet out of all the primers available but it wasn't a perfect match for me.

What's your current favorite eye primer and what kind of eyelids do you have?

NARS Terre de Feu

Wednesday, February 6, 2013
I feel a little silly that I've been wearing this lipstick a lot this winter yet have failed completely to blog about it. I've had it since October and I've put some serious mileage on this dark red matte lipstick! NARS Terre de Feu is definitely a good first pick from NARS' Pure Matte lipstick line.

The color is a bit deceiving, for me it really wanted to photograph warmer and more yellow than it actually is. Though it seems to look a bit more brick red in pictures, it is definitely cooler and more blue based.
The formula is really quite nice, matte but not as drying as mattes can be on the lips. The pigmentation is fantastic and the wear was great for me. Other than eating and drinking (of course!) I found that Terre de Feu was extremely long lasting.

I definitely see myself picking up more NARS Pure Mattes. I need to talk myself into shades other than reds though, I need to challenge myself to start wearing and incorporating pinks, plums and nudes.

I'm also wearing:

Brows: NARS Bali, NYX Eyebrow Shaper
Face: Black Radiance Complexion Perfection, mixture of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk and MUFE HD, BECCA Fine Loose Finishing Powder, BECCA Nymph PSP, Chanel Notorious
Eyes: NYX HD Eyeshadow Base, NARS Rajasthan duo, La Femme Eyeliner Sealer, Calvin Klein Night Dust, false lashes

NARS Terre de Feu Pure Matte lipstick is $25 and can be found at Sephora, Nordstrom and the NARS website.

Do you have a favorite matte lipstick? Or anything from the NARS Pure Matte line?

Playing Around With NARS New Wave: EOTD

Monday, August 6, 2012

So I've been kinda busy, not really posting on Twitter or blogging at my usual frequency. The reason is that I'm absolutely obsessed with the Olympics and can barely tear myself away. However, I have been playing with my new NARS palette, and wanted to share some pictures.

Brows: NARS Bali shadow
Eyes: LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer, NARS New Wave: Daphne, Rated R, Tokyo I, Pandora II, La Femme Eye Liner Sealer, false lashes, Revlon PhotoReady mascara

Back to the Olympics I go! I'm not just sitting there slack jawed (no wait, that's totally me. I am in complete awe of these athletes, the grace and ease of which they move their bodies). I've also been frankening like mad and swatching my polishes, more posts about that soon!

What events have you been watching? Or are you not into following the Olympics?

New LE NARS New Wave Palette

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Usually when I get new makeup, I test it out and thoroughly play with it before writing about it. That's not the case today. I ran home and started to photograph and swatch this NARS palette, called New Wave as soon as got in the door. Due to the limited nature of this product, I thought I'd show you guys pictures and info about where to get it before they are all gone.

New Wave is one of two new palettes that are limited edition. The other palette is called American Dream. The shades in both palette are all permanent but like all NARS shadow palettes- you can't deny what exceptionally good deals they are, especially if you use NARS shadows a lot like I do but don't want to buy all the duos and colors individually. The packaging is different than my previous NARS palettes, with glossy 'NARS' embossed on the cover rather the traditional white lettering.

Let's jump right in. There are six shades, two that are shimmers and four mattes.

Top row: Pandora (II), Jolie Poupee (II), Rated R (II)
Bottom row: Outremer, Pandora (II), Daphne

From left to right:
Pandora (II) is a sheer icing white shimmer.
Jolie Poupee (II) is a soft periwinkle matte.
Rated R (II) is a bright lime green-yellow shimmer (this does not photograph very shimmer both in the pan and in swatches but is quite evident in real life).
Outremer is a vivid ultramarine blue matte.
Pandora (II) is a matte black.
Daphne is a deep matte purple that is quite balanced, leaning neither red nor blue.

Based on my previous experience with NARS shadows, I can tell you that the mattes are what I like to call high maintenance. To get the maximum color intensity and performance, not any old primer will do. Over my e.l.f. Eyelid Primer, they perform horribly- patchy with little to no color pay off. Over my LORAC Behind The Scenes Primer, they look fantastic. The key is to use a great primer and to use MUCH MORE than you usually would- a thick coat of primer. Also, apply your shadows while it is still a little damp on your lids, using a patting/pressing motion rather than sweeping.

Pandora (II) is rather sheer, but I don't mind it because it is much better as a inner highlight or brow highlight than it is a main lid color. The sheerness keeps it from looking frosty. The matte black Pandora (II) is really handy as a liner- talk about an all in one palette! Highlight, liner, vivid colors that blow my mind.

Where to buy this palette: This palette is $55 has sold out pretty quickly at many locations. Currently, it is not available online at the Nordstrom website any more BUT I have good news. I talked to the NARS counter manager, Tara Stugelmeyer at the Mall of America today and she has a few left. If you call her at 952-883-2121 (Extension 1427), you can still get your hands on one AND get free shipping on it. Even better, with Nordstrom's Anniversary sale going on, there's a GWP. If you spend $150, you get a free NARS lip palette with six shades!

Blush Breakdown Vol. I: Peachy Pink With Gold Shimmer

Saturday, July 7, 2012

Did you know that recently I did some major purging? Yes, it's true! My sister suddenly became the proud owner of about a ba-jillion pieces of new makeup. I reduced my blushes from 38 down to less than 25! So now I'm going to chronicle what I'm left with.

This is the first volume- pink with gold shimmer. Some of these photograph peachy because of the gold flash.
In the above picture, they are (clockwise from left to right) LORAC Multi Platinum Palette, Rock & Republic Call Me, LORAC Miss Davenporte Showstopper Palette and NARS Deep Throat.

So I didn't realize it at the time, but the two blushes from the LORAC palette are the one and the same- it's both a shade called Couture! Silly me, I had a double and I didn't even know it.

The main difference between these blushes is the amount of gold shimmer. LORAC Couture has quite a bit more than NARS Deep Throat making it look lighter and falsely peachier, but they are otherwise the same shade. Rock & Republic Call Me is tad darker pink than the others though.

In this FOTD, I'm wearing the gorgeous Rock & Republic Call Me as well as:

Brows: NARS Bali shadow
Eyes: e.l.f. Eyelid Primer, NARS Habenara (purple side), NARS Tokyo (matte black side)
Face: MUFE Full Cover Concealer, MUFE HD mixed with Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, Rock & Republic Call Me
Lips: Dior Addict High Shine #566 Taffetas

I'll be honest. When I wear these blushes, they pretty much look the same. If I had to pick just one to keep, I would definitely pick Rock & Republic Call Me because the quality is just superior to the others. However, since the LORAC blush is in the palettes, I'm kind of stuck with them. At least it is convenient for travel!

By the way, every time I bring up "Call Me" I really want to add in a "Maybe". Thanks, Carly Rae Jepsen.

What's your favorite peachy-pink blush? Is it one of the more famous ones out there like NARS Orgasm (or its clones such as Cargo Rome, Milani Luminous etc)?

NARS Nouveau Monde Duo + FOTD

Thursday, October 13, 2011
A few months ago, my fairy godmother gave me a NARS duo. I appreciated it very much, I was going through a really rough time and I was truly touched by that gesture.
NARS Nouveau Monde was from the Spring 2011 collection. It has a gleaming lilac on one side and a rich earthy olive shimmer on the other. They both look rather flat and dimensionless in the brand new pan picture, but trust me they are not.
Bare skin on left, over primer on right. Outdoors, sunlight.

They are not super finely milled, but the large particle size is what gives it a different kind of sparkle from many other eyeshadows that I own. Though it may not be apparent form the pictures, the sparkle in the lilac half is quite silvery and cool. Pigmentation is decent, due to that hardened pan texture that a lot of NARS shadows have these days.
I used it in a FOTD today.
I think that I over blended a bit, and lost some of that fabulous sparkle. I'll have to watch out for that next time. Plus I think that in the future, I'll try the olive side as the main lid shade instead of vice versa. It's such a rich color, I want it to have a chance to really shine.

I used:
Brows: NARS Bali shadow
Eyes: LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Primer, NARS Nouveau Monde duo, NARS All About Eve duo, Wet'n'Wild Creme liner, Rimmel Lycra Lash Extender.
Face: L'oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base, Graftobian Hi-Def Creme Foundation, NARS Douceur blush, BECCA Fine Loose Finishing Powder.
Lips: BECCA Gisella Lipstick

Once again- thank you so much GB for that duo. You don't know what you mean to me. <3

NARS Sin (Sinfully Gorgeous!)

Friday, February 11, 2011
Howdy, Readers!
It's the weekend, baby! I'm so happy. Not that I'll get much rest, I have so much to do this weekend!
Today's post is about a present I got for Christmas. It's another NARS item to add to my collection- Sin blush.
It's a soft mauve with golden sparkle.
Unlike my other two NARS blushes Deep Throat and Douceur, I feel as though this one is much more pigmented (not really complaining, you see- Deep Throat and Douceur are nearly impossible to mess up application wise) and a bit softer in texture.

I use a soft round blush brush to sweep a tiny bit onto my cheeks and it looks really natural. Unlike some of my other pinky or peachy blushes that I own, the cool mauve doesn't enhance any surface redness. The gold sparkle is very apparent in the pan, but it's barely noticeable on my cheeks. It's almost more of a soft gold glow.

Since I've had this blush, I find myself reaching for it at least once a week. It's been getting a lot of wear! Not that I'll hit pan anytime soon, NARS blushes are just so big. What a great present, eh?

Also featured in this FOTD:
Brows: NARS Bali shadow
Eyes: UDPP, NARS All About Eve duo (left side), Shiro Link shadow, MAC Blacktrack Fluidline
Face: Graftobian HD Glamour Creme, Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer, MUFE Full Cover Concealer, NARS Sin blush, BECCA Loose Powder
Lips: Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Mauve

Do you own Sin? Do you have another NARS blush that you really love?

Product featured in this post was given to me as a gift. Please refer to my disclosure policy for details.

NARS Wicked and Cheyenne Duos ($10 Each!)

Saturday, November 6, 2010
Sephora had recently put two NARS duos on sale for $10 each as a part of their weekly specials. I managed to combine that with the last day of the F&F sale (as well as Ebates!) and got a great deal on them. Now, these aren't exactly colors I would have normally picked for myself (to be honest, they'd be at the bottom of my NARS duos-to-buy list) but I'm actually quite pleased with how much I like 'em.

Pictures taken indoors, under light box, with flash.

Cheyenne has a marmalade orange side and a shimmery burgundy.
Wicked has a shimmery pale yellowish shade as well as a light key lime green side.

Despite being colors that are somewhat out of my comfort zone, they're very nice shadows. They're well pigmented and easy to work with, though Wicked's shades looked better to me as sheer washes rather than as heavy built up color but that's just my opinion. I really can't wait to start incorporating these into my EOTDs.
If you hurry, you can still get either of these duos for $10 at Sephora.com still!
What do you think of these NARS duos? Like the colors? Or prefer other NARS shades?
