Color Club Cotton Candy Gradient

Sunday, June 30, 2013

Hi folks!
Today's nails are a soft gradient using shades I was recently sent from Color Club. This manicure really reminds me of a mixed bag of cotton candy.

I used Evolution as the base color (the light blue) with Flamingo (hot pink) near the tips. I then added two coats of Pearl-spective over the whole manicure. Pearl-spective is a effect topcoat, it has all these little iridescent pink flecks that look almost yellow from some angles. I think that's why Evolution looks a bit teal almost.

Funny story about cotton candy, actually. Last fall when I still lived in MN, my dad came home unexpectedly with an industrial cotton candy machine. You know, the kind they have at carnivals and fairs (not the dinky As Seen On TV one). It was so big that he could barely get it into the house, my brother had to help him tilt it sideways.

It was COMPLETELY weird behavior for my dad. He doesn't like sweets at all. When I called my sister to hurry home and see the bizarre sight of our dad spinning tons of hot fluffy cotton candy, I had to repeat the message three times because she couldn't comprehend what I was seeing. It was just all around... odd.

Anyways! Have you done any manicures (or makeup looks) that reminded you of food lately?

Color Club 2013 Halo Hues

Tuesday, February 26, 2013
So you should know by now that holographic is my favorite finish of polish. When the first set of Color Club Halo Hues came out last year, I was impressed by the how holographic they looked in photos but not wowed by the color choice. For some reason, the colors looked really blah to me (probably because I don't dig pinks and magentas and already have plenty of silvers). However when the 2013 set come out (you'll have to excuse my language here), I went apeshit. The colors were stunning and I wanted them all.

I've tried to explain to Morgan the appeal of holographic polishes. I've tried to point out the rainbow effect. I've followed him around our place thrusting my iPad at him, trying to get him to look at pictures of different holographic polishes and how they were different. And how I needed them all. Well I for Valentine's Day he ordered the whole Halo Hues set as a part of my present (and I suspect that the mesmerizing rainbows would shut me up).

Miss Bliss. Two coats. It could really be a one coater but I did two because my nails are not perfectly smooth. Pink may not be my favorite color, but the holo in this one is particularly strong so all is forgiven.

Cosmic Fate. Perhaps my favorite. A coppery orange halo! Also two coats. Strong halo effect.

Kismet. A light green holo. Reminds me of China Glaze L8R G8R, I'll have to pull my swatch sticks out to compare. Relative to this whole set, one of the lesser intense holos. Three coats.

Over The Moon. Two coats. Vivid blue holo. Similar to Glitter Gal Bondi Blue.

Eternal Beauty. Gah. I don't even have words for this. Two coats, utter perfection. I love that it is more blue based than my other purple holos.

Beyond. Two coats, but could be a one coater. Strong black holo but the least holo-y out of the bunch. It's not a plain black, if you look at the area where sunlight is hitting the nail directly (and on the bottle), you'll observe fine bronze shimmer.

So relative to each other, Miss Bliss and Cosmic Fate are the most holo while Beyond and Kismet are the least. However, compared to other linear holos these are fantastical. The majority of them are so intense that indoors under indirect light the rainbow can still be seen. The formula on these was excellent. Smooth and glossy, not that matte formula that some holos have that can skip during application. Everything about this set of holos makes me want to dance and sing. Thankfully for Morgan, I'll just sit here and admire the rainbows on my nails quietly in the corner.

These were purchased from Enospring back when they were $39, they went up to $40. Free shipping though, and it was dispatched very quickly.

Do you have any of the new Color Club Halo Hues?

That Looks Awfully Familiar (Sinful Colors UFO over Color Club With Abandon)

Monday, June 4, 2012

I can't be the only one who has accidentally bought the same color twice. When I was at that sketchy little nail supply store, I picked up a bottle of Color Club With Abandon. When I got home, I realized that it looked exactly the same as a bottle of Funky Fingers Voodoo. Derp! I guess I'll have to give this new bottle of With Abandon away or something.
I keep forgetting that Forsythe- the company that makes both Funky Fingers and Color Club, often just renames the same colors and puts them in different bottles.

It's still pretty though- a sheer dark, almost blackish brown base with micro flakes of copper and magenta. Due to how watery it is, it takes at least three coats to become opaque. Or one coat over black, if you prefer.

I decided to layer one of my recent acquisitions- Sinful Colors UFO. I was so happy to have found this at that Rite Aid in Sacramento because I do believe that it has been discontinued for some time. UFO is a super sheer orange with micro and round glitters- a mixture of orange and opalescent glitter that flashes green and blue. It's really quite pretty, but sort of "busy" looking- there's a lot going on at the same time.

Have you ever repurchased something you already owned by accident?

Funky Fingers Moonwalk

Monday, October 3, 2011
Good evening!
I think it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that this polish is spectacularly blingy.  I bought this about a year ago, swatched it once on one finger and never took a good look at it under good direct light. My mistake.
Funky Fingers Moonwalk is jet black creme with silver and holographic glitter in slightly varying sizes. I think that the difference in particle size gives it a even more scattered rainbow look.
I think it's well named. Even though I know the moon is far from being rainbow colored, there is something extra terrestrial about this polish. Kinda like pictures of galaxies, far far away.

There's a shot without the bottle. This might be the first time where the bottle is actually distracting in the picture. Isn't that lovely? I thought it'd eat top coat like crazy but actually one coat of Gelous covered it nicely.

Super pigmented, this was only two coats. People who are heavy handed with polish might even be able to do it in one.
Unfortunately, Funky Fingers is quite hard to find. I've only ever seen it at 5Below stores, but some regions don't have them. Also, the selection varies seasonally. On the bright side, Color Club (also owned by Forsythe, who owns Funky Fingers) is known for repromoting FF colors in CC collections. Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll come out again with a different name.

Color Club Preview: Alter Ego Collection

Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Hello Readers!
Look, polish-
Oh noes, another nail collection post! I just got an email from Color Club about a new collection, so I thought I'd show you the promo pictures.
It looks like we'll be getting a softer, springtime taupe creme, some delicate pastels and some eye catching indigos! What's that on the end, an eggplant purple? Yes please! The only thing I'm apprehensive about is that dark Snakeskin looking polish in the middle (remember Snakeskin and how I didn't like the finish?), but maybe it'll be like Snakeskin, minus the bumps.

This is what Color Club had to say about the collection:
Color Club lets you create high-fashion looks for every identity with Alter Ego,
their latest collection of diverse, long-lasting lacquers!
Alter Ego’s consists of 12 shades! Go incognito with our opaque shades or
rendezvous in full view with our sheers of Alter Ego ‘LIGHTS’ and ‘DARKS’!
Alter Ego’s ‘Reveal Your Mystery Collection’ 7 piece salon pack includes Get a
Clue, Revealed, Incognito, Secret Rendezvous, Sheer Disguise, and Give Me a
Hint shades plus Milky White Base Coat. Their ‘Keep It Undercover Collection’
7 piece salon pack includes Alter Ego, Secret Agent, Total Mystery, Alias,
Ulterior Motive and Masquerading plus Vivid Top Coat.

Mmmm, count me in! I'm especially fond of purples, I have more violet polishes than any other in my collection so I'm quite excited for the dark half of this collection.

What do you think? Do you spot any polishes you know you need to have?

Love,

New ArtClub (Color Club) Glam Nails

Saturday, November 20, 2010
I just got an interesting email from Color Club about some new decals- and I thought I'd share!
According to Color Club-
Fashion-forward nail designs are a cinch with GLAM. The high-quality, amazingly self-stickable decals lay right over nail, and a layer of top coat seals the deal.
Mix and match patterns, use on natural nails or embed them in gel, or over polish – it’s all up to you!
Doesn't that sound pretty cool? I wonder what the wear is like on these- I'll have to buy a pack to try and review! I'll admit, as much as I like painting my nails and doing designs on them there are some days when I wouldn't mind something like these Glam decals. So far, it looks like only two designs- Mad About Plaid (big plaid pattern) and Total Opulence (white with crystal) decals, but hopefully there will be more to pick form in the future!

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection: Covered in Diamonds

Monday, October 18, 2010
2x Orly La Playa, 1x Covered in Diamonds, 2x Seche Vite
Indoors, under natural light box, flash
I'm so sorry, this post is way late since this collection has been out for quite a while already! But I -had- to blog about this particular polish (or fancy topcoat, rather) since I think it is the most unique lacquer of the whole collection.
Color Club's Covered in Diamonds is this awesome enamel that is jelly like in consistency with these amazing prismatic shards. They vary in size and shape but are really quite opalescent and reflective! My classmates oohed and ahhed over my nails when I wore Covered in Diamonds over a dark navy colored base (Orly La Playa) because they had never seen anything like it.
There's only one slight downside to this polish, and that is the shards don't quite lie flat on the nail and tend to catch on fabric and snag a bit. The first time I wore it, I didn't put a top coat over it and the little bits caught on the upholstery of my vehicle and ruined my manicure. I learned from that experience though, and now put two coats of Seche Vite (or any thick top coat, really) over Covered in Diamonds which really smooths out the surface and keeps it snag free.
In short, I'm absolutely dazzled by this polish and really urge you to get it to try it out. I bought mine at my local beauty shop for about $3 and it is definitely one of my favorite fall buys.

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection: Nothing But Truffle

Tuesday, September 28, 2010
1x Essie First Base, 2x Nothing But Truffle
This is a pretty simple polish, a dark brown shimmer. When the light hits it right, if you're very careful you can see a slight variation in the shimmer, a little bit of golden hues and also a slight hint of magenta. (I swear, nobody stares more intently at polishes than me, I'm clearly obsessed with a lot of spare time on my hands).
A very neat, chic color whose name makes me suddenly hungry for Godiva truffles.

Do you like brown polishes? Or do you prefer brights on your finger tips?

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection: Positively Posh

Saturday, September 25, 2010
Outdoors, no flash, indirect lighting. 1x Essie First Base
3x Positively Posh
Ah, taupe polish- you complicated being. You have so many variations and I must say that I love Color Club's take on you.
Positively Posh is a darker, cooler taupe creme. Indoors, there's a tinge of purple but I found that under natural light it looked more chocolatey. I do declare, this color does make my hands look so neat and elegant looking, I think it has magical properties.

These pictures were taken with two coats, but I think that next time I'll do three, just for complete creme opacity. Very smooth application, decent wear time.

I ordered this online from 8ty8beauty.com for $2.49- it's one of my best polish buys, I'm thinking. Two perfectly manicured thumbs up for Color Club!

Outdoors, flash
Ok, so what do you think? Do you like this color? Or are taupes not your thing?

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection

Friday, September 24, 2010
I totally did this out of order- I really meant to introduce the collection first before showing swatches, but ended up showing you some of the polishes first- whoops.
Now, Color Club is one of my favorite brands for nail polish because they are Big 3 (Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP) free, they have a wide array of colors with great application and wear and to top it all off, they're priced at the extremely low end of the price spectrum (usually about $2.50-3.50 each, depending on your retailer). What's not to love?
I really liked their fall seasons' collection, Untamed Luxury. Er, actually Untamed Luxury comprises of TWO sets, the Indulgence Collection and the Diamond Collection. Indulgence Collection has the non-glitters while the Diamond Collection has the glitters.

Indulgence Collection:
Pretty in Platinum, Wild Orchid, Positively Posh, Soft As Cashmere,
Nothing But Truffle, Jewel Of A Girl, Ready to Royal

Diamond Collection:
De-Luxe-Icious, Miss Hautee, Red Velvet, Untamed Luxury,
Resort to Red, Snakeskin, Covered in Diamonds
I like that there's a wide array of finishes and shades- from the must have greige of this season to a pearly grey shade, to glitter shades and a very unique opalescent glitter shard-filled jelly top coat. Though I didn't buy the whole collection, I did get many of the colors and will finish reviewing all of them individually soon!

What did you think about this collection?

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection: Snakeskin

Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Outdoors, no flash direct sunlight. 1x Orly Top2Bottom,
2x Snakeskin
Here's another polish from Color Club's fall collection! This one is called Snakeskin. It's a dark frost, metallic grey-green with gold shimmer bits. It's interesting and unique but I didn't find it flattering on my fingers. The consistency is nice, as it the application- just one of those polishes that isn't "me". I admit, I mainly purchased it because of the name- I have an eyeshadow from Rock & Republic also called 'Snakeskin' and I loved it so much, I automatically assumed I'd like this totally unrelated nail lacquer as well. Silly me.

Color Club Untamed Luxury Collection: Red Velvet

Monday, September 20, 2010
Lucky you, two posts from me in one night!
Color Club's fall collection is right on target this year- they've got the trendy greige and taupe lacquers, as well as   complex frosts, glittery delights and of course a flaked jelly polish. But let's take it slow- one polish at a time!
First up, Red Velvet.
Red Velvet is a pretty simple black with fine red glitters. A classic, hard to mess up combination. I did three layers, and it did dry to a rather gritty finish, unfortunately. But nothing a coat of Seche Vite can't fix.

I took pictures outside, but it was getting pretty dark so I used flash. Color Club's polishes go for about $2.49 on sites like 8ty8Beauty or Head2ToeBeauty, and about $3.50 if you find it at beauty supply stores.

So, does this polish remind you of any other black with red glitters?

My First Holographic Nail Polish

Monday, June 21, 2010
I have the most beautiful thing in the world. More beautiful than a sunrise over a lake, a sunset over the Grand Canyon, my unborn children, etc. Holographic nail polish.
I'm a nail polish amateur, but I do have a bone to pick with the nail polish world.
I switched to square tips, see? 1x Seche Clear Base, 2x Love 'Em Leave 'Em
Why. Didn't. You guys tell me about this sooner? It blows my mind! Sure, I've seen some pictures of holographic nail polish, but the opalescent effect just simply isn't captured well on camera. It's stunning! The one I have on today is from Color Club, it's called Love 'Em Leave 'Em. It's a beige, but boy it couldn't be anything further away from boring.
The interesting thing about this holo (and I guess all holos? I wouldn't know, I only own one!) is that it's formula applies like it's matte. The reflective qualities make it shiny again. Kinda odd, no? I would top it off with Seche Vite, but I found that it actually dulls down the shimmery rainbow-y goodness, refraction at work.
It took only two coats to achieve this effect too! And without a top coat, it lasted a pretty decent amount of time, 2 days (this is more impressive than it sounds, I abuse my fingertips and get way more wear'n'tear than the average person).
Let's just say that I will be, without a doubt hunting down more holos!

What do you think of holos?
